The Original Investigation titled “Effect of Lower Tidal Volume Ventilation Facilitated by Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal vs Standard Care Ventilation on 90-Day Mortality in Patients With Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure: The REST Randomized Clinical Trial,” published in the September 21, 2021, issue of JAMA, included an error in Figure 1 in the article that indicated the incorrect number of patients excluded because of a do-not-attempt-resuscitation order and an error in the labels of eFigure 2 in Supplement 4. The figures have been corrected and now indicate the correct number of excluded patients in Figure 1 and the correct labels in eFigure 2 in Supplement 4. (All other information in Figure 1 and Supplement 4 was correct and is unchanged.)

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a major issue in extremely preterm infants due to its high prevalence, increased health care resource use and cost, and association with long-term respiratory problems and neurodevelopmental impairment. Although BPD is a multifactorial disease, ventilation-induced lung injuries are an important factor in its pathogenesis. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to avoid intubation and mechanical ventilation is considered effective in preventing BPD and has become standard care for preterm infants with respiratory distress after birth.

This randomized clinical trial includes preterm infants with a gestational age of 25 to 28 weeks who were supported with continuous positive airway pressure and compares the effect of selective application of minimally invasive surfactant therapy at a low fraction of inspired oxygen threshold vs control treatment on survival without bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
