Around 8% of people have an aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 variant called ALDH2*2 that can cause facial flushing after drinking alcohol and has been tied to higher risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). New research published in Science Translational Medicine confirmed the CAD link with a genome-wide association study of 29 319 CAD cases and 183 134 controls from Japan and then explored the mechanisms in a small subset of participants.
