To the Editor In 2000, I published an article in the “A Piece of My Mind” section of JAMA that was a fictional story about an older Alaskan man. At the time, I erroneously thought creative liberties were acceptable in this section of the journal. In 2001, I became aware of this mischaracterization after an objection was raised and published a Letter in Reply with an explanation. In light of today’s focus on inclusion and with greater understanding of the effects even unintentional missteps may have on the experience of underrepresented and marginalized populations, I realize this article may have inadvertently reinforced stereotypes or mischaracterized Native American and Alaska Native individuals.
